Cats, dogs and horses: we're all ears

Animals are absolutely amazing creatures and I love learning all about them. Did you know that humans have a hearing frequency range of about 20 Hz to 20 kHz? Or that the normal intelligible outdoor range of the male human voice in still air is 180 m? How does this compare to our animal family?

Cats have a hearing range of 48 Hz to 85 kHz and can hear up to 720m – 900m away. That's roughly four to five times farther than humans can. Cats have a great range of ear movement with 32 muscles that allow them to rotate their ears 180 degrees.

Dogs can hear between 40 Hertz (Hz) to 60 kHz and can hear up to about 1609 m (one mile) away. Almost nine times farther than humans.

Horses have a hearing range of 55 Hz to 33.5 kHz and can hear up to 4393 meters or 2.73 miles away. That's 24 times farther than humans.

Incredible!
